Lo leo en una entrevista al historiador francés Pierre Manent recientemente traducida por Gallia Watch en la que se le pregunta por su libro La Razón de las Naciones:
What they call laïcité is the juridical and glorious formulation of a civil war won by one party and lost by the other. Republican France subjugated Catholic France and Catholic France accepted it. And the Church behaves like a vanquished and tolerated party. I don’t want to go back over the wrongs of the Church, but when it no longer represents a threat to freedom, and when keeping the religious experience outside of the public sphere weakens the nation in its substance and its consciousness of itself, this situation cannot endure. You cannot simultaneously welcome with open arms a religion that has always been foreign to Europe and expel from the history of France a religion that has always been a part of it. There you have an enormous historical injustice coupled with a political and social absurdity.
Más claro agua. Quienes insisten en que la laicidad es la neutralidad en asuntos religiosos mienten como bellacos y quienes se lo creen actúan como mentecatos.
